What is it?

Embolus from the carotid artery, heart or aorta or a form of vascular insufficiency as a result of arteriosclerosis; cardiac arrhythmia; hypercoagulation, rarely tumours of the orbit.

Treatment

For the cardiovascular cause treatment is referred to the specialist. Ideally all such cases must be thoroughly worked up by the consultant physician/cardiologist.

For the eye, treatment with a calcium channel blockers is useful.
